Rumors abound that Madonna and husband, Guy Ritchie, are over. Maybe she's still angry over the way he'd fall asleep during their trendy, Beverly Hills group Kabbalah meditations. Whatever the reasons, according to News of the World - now there's a blockbuster source - Madonna seems intent to end it with Ritchie and move back to New York with their children Lourdes, Rocco, and David. Apparently, they've been leading quite separate lives for the past several months. Not surprising. Rumors of their marriage problems have been circulating since late 2006. When he didn't show up at her induction into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, the break-up buzz went wild.
Aside from the upheaval that always accompanies a divorce, including the family's possible relocation without Ritchie, what's going to happen to that fake British accent Madonna's been cultivating the last few years? Ok, so maybe she did pick up some of vernacular and a bit of the royal twang honestly. It happens. But for a girl who seemed to take pride in her New York-esque accent and demeanor, she went "native" awfully quick.
Madonna was only 23 when she broke out with "Like A Virgin." At 49, she's allowed to have gone through a few changes. The Madonna of the 21st century, though, is a far cry from the persona she projected in the early days. If she thought the "Queen's English" - and accent - would make her seem more sophisticated, well, I doubt the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame or the rest of the world gives a damn. If the split news is true, though, it'll be interesting to see her next phase of re-invention.
Let's check the list: She's already worn the cone bra; married Sean Penn; had sex with a black Jesus; produced a sex book; played Eva Peron; dated Vanilla Ice; made out with Britney - who could easily be her daughter; joined a Kaballah cult; adopted a Malawi child; declared herself the "ambassador for Judaism"; and recently produced an album cover making her look like a middle-aged woman trying to recapture her youth and failing miserably. Perhaps she could shock the world again by settling down, raising her kids, and staying out of the limelight for awhile. I'm sure, however, that's just not her style.
