Cead Mile Failte and Happy St. Patrick's Day to our dear readers. We're just a couple of weeks old and feel so warmly welcomed to the celebrity gossip world already. Thanks, loveys!
slave2celeb and I are both part Irish, so it really would be a sin for us not to celebrate the day in some small way. So, if you promise to put down your corned beef and cabbage long enough to read, I promise to put down my pint of Harp long enough to give to you.... some of our (well, at least my - I can't speak for slave2celeb, but since I have the mic right now...muahahahah) favorite Irish celebrities. Enjoy!
Mary Black. You've probably never heard of her, unless you ARE Irish, or frequent Celtic Festivals, or listen to Smooth Jazz radio - which is how I discovered her. What can I say - I worked for a woman who made us listen to KKSF all day in the office and threatened to fire anyone who changed the channel. She's a member of the famous Black family of Irish music makers, including Shay, Michael, Martin and Frances. She has won numerous music awards in Ireland. She sings everything from traditional ballads to Burt Bacharach covers, and she has the loveliest voice. Check her out on iTunes - you won't be disappointed.
Kenneth Branagh. My teenage self saw Kenneth Branagh in Dead Again and fell in love. As an adult I came to realize that in addition to his good looks and accent, he had other redeeming qualities. How can you not like a guy who on one hand is a fine Shakespearean actor, and on the other is a pitch-perfect Gilderoy Lockhart? He's a versatile actor, dramatic and comedic. Love him.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers. He has that crazy dark hair/blue eyes thing going on. But let's not be too shallow - he was a great foil to one of my favorite actresses, Parminder Nagra, in Bend It Like Beckham.
Sharon Shannon. If you like Celtic music you will like her. Check her out! She plays accordion and fiddle and a bunch of other instruments too.
Liam Neeson. I don't think I've ever seen Liam Neeson in a role that I didn't like - and I held that opinion even before he played Oskar Schindler, so you know my love goes back a ways. He's Qui-Gon Jinn! He's the voice of Aslan! He's Ra's Al Ghul (a villan no doubt, but without whom The Batman would never have become as great as he is)! And how can you not like a guy who (according to IMDB) was a forklift operator for Guinness before he became famous?
Dolores Keane. She's a vocalist known as "The Voice of Ireland." Her song Caledonia is heartbreaking and nostalgic and inspiring all at once.
And go ahead and flame all you want, but NO, Bono is NOT on this list. Click here to see what I think of Bono. U2 used to be a great band and now they're just some dudes who apparently can't count.
Have a fun, and most important, a very safe St. Patrick's Day - and don't forget, an Advil and a glass of water before you go to bed tonight will help reduce the nastiness of your hangover tomorrow morning. Erin Go Bragh!
